『Hatebreeder』は、CHILDREN OF BODOMが鋭利なギター・リフ、速いドラミング、派手に動くキーボードを一体化させた第2作だ。極端なスピードと荒々しい声の中にも、印象的な旋律とギター／キーボードの掛け合いがある。デビュー作の路線を、より洗練された形へと発展させた一枚である。 “Warheart”“Silent Night, Bodom Night”“Downfall”といった楽曲では、曲は常に前へ走るが、ただの混沌ではなく、細部まで計算された高揚感を持っている。“Bed Of Razors”“Black Widow”“Children Of Bodom”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“Towards Dead End”“Wrath Within”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。アレキシ・ライホのギターとヤンネ・ウィルマンのキーボードによる目まぐるしい掛け合いはこのバンドの最大の魅力の一つであり、デビュー作の荒削りな衝動をより緻密で洗練された形へと昇華させた本作は、初期の傑作として高く評価されている。ヤンネ・ウィルマンのキーボードが本格的に加わり、バンドの音楽性は一気に開花した。メロディック・デスに華やかな技巧を持ち込んだ、初期の重要作だ。

Hatebreeder is the second album on which CHILDREN OF BODOM unified sharp guitar riffs, fast drumming and flamboyantly moving keyboards. Even within the extreme speed and rough voice, there is impressive melody and guitar/keyboard interplay. It is a record that developed the debut’s direction into a more refined form. On “Warheart,” “Silent Night, Bodom Night” and “Downfall,” the songs always run forward, yet they are not mere chaos but hold an elation calculated to the details. Songs like “Bed Of Razors,” “Black Widow” and “Children Of Bodom” breathe the band’s full playing too. With Janne Wirman’s keyboards joining in earnest, the band’s musicality bloomed at a stroke. Bringing flamboyant technique into melodic death, it is an important early work.
