IRON MAIDENの初代ヴォーカリストとして『IRON MAIDEN』(1980)『KILLERS』(1981)で唯一無二の荒々しい歌声を刻んだポール・ディアノ。2019年にCleopatra Recordsから発表した『TALES FROM THE BEAST』のデラックス・エディションで、2024年10月に他界した彼を偲ぶ再発盤にあたる。「Wrathchild」「Phantom of the Opera」「Prowler」「Killers」「Iron Maiden」「Murders in the Rue Morgue」「Running Free」「Remember Tomorrow」「Sanctuary」といったMAIDEN在籍期の代表曲を自ら歌い直したほか、MEGADETH「Symphony of Destruction」、LED ZEPPELIN「Kashmir」、VAN HALEN「Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love」、KISS「War Machine」のカヴァーも収録した全17曲。パンキッシュな衝動を最後まで手放さなかったシンガーの、ざらついた声質と歌い回しをあらためて確かめられる一枚だ。

Paul Di'Anno was Iron Maiden's first vocalist, and his raw, unmistakable delivery defined Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981). This is the deluxe edition of Tales from the Beast, the album Cleopatra Records released in 2019, reissued in memory of the singer, who died in October 2024. Across seventeen tracks he revisits the Maiden-era songs he originally sang — "Wrathchild", "Phantom of the Opera", "Prowler", "Killers", "Iron Maiden", "Murders in the Rue Morgue", "Running Free", "Remember Tomorrow", "Sanctuary" — and adds covers of Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction", Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir", Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and Kiss's "War Machine". It is a good place to hear again the grain of a voice that never let go of its punk impulse.
