Sunholy is the album Shade Empire, the Finnish symphonic black metal band, made six years after Poetry of the Ill-Minded, a record described at the time as an ode to hatred. The title folds "sun" into "unholy", and from the first bars it is clear the nine songs are trying to pull apart a set of dualities: light and dark, good and evil, the sacred and the heretical. The band's own unsparing violence is intact and the writing carries more suggestion than before. Of the three songs released ahead of it, the opener "In Amongst the Woods" allows almost no ground between melodic singing and merciless screaming, the title track shows the full weight of their symphonic black metal, and "Torn Asunder" moves between melody and low metallic impact without a seam. Ultra-Vybe carried the Candlelight / Spinefarm release into Japan as CNDL-800060PJ on 27 January 2024 -- metal100 lists it under 20 December, but tower.jp and musicjapanet both give the later date.
