The Cosmic Race is the seventh album by Scanner, the German power metal band, and their first in nine years. A good many listeners were knocked flat in the late 1980s by "Galactos", the song that opened the Doomsday News compilation alongside Rage and Helloween, and their 1988 debut Hypertrace, with a guest appearance from Ralf Scheepers, is still spoken of as a landmark of German metal. They read as a band of the late eighties, but counting the outfit they grew out of they have been going since 1977, adding records across a run of splits and reunions. Only the guitarist Axel Julius is left from those years; the speed and the melody, set as ever against a science-fiction backdrop, are exactly where they were. Ward Records issued the Japanese edition on 9 February 2024. Nine tracks, about forty-eight minutes.
