Defiance is the latest studio album by Praying Mantis, the English veterans of the new wave of British heavy metal whose standing in Japan goes back to their 1981 debut Time Tells No Lies and has never really slipped. At home the story went differently: business trouble stopped them after that album and a few singles, and it took a tenth-anniversary NWOBHM concert in Japan in 1990 to get them properly started again, with Predator In Disguise following. Around the Troy brothers the line-up has always moved — Dennis Stratton, Paul Di'Anno and Clive Burr of Iron Maiden and Gary Barden of MSG have all passed through. The band turned forty in 2021 and released Katharsis a year later. What holds this one together is what always has: the harmony vocals and the twin lead guitars, under songs written around a hook. Frontiers and Marquee Incorporated in Japan released it on the same day, 19 April 2024, the Japanese edition as MICP-11858 with an alternate version of the title track added — twelve tracks, about fifty-one minutes.
