LINER NOTES
A five-disc box set surveying the early years of Nightwing, the British band formed in 1978 who came up alongside the rising N.W.O.B.H.M. scene. HNE Recordings, part of Cherry Red, releases it on 28 August 2026 (HNE5BOX246). The line-up of Gordon Rowley (bass), Kenny Newton (keyboards), guitarists Eric Percival and Alec Johnson and drummer Steve Bartley is represented by the four studio albums and one live record they issued between 1980 and 1985. It opens with the debut Something in the Air, which threads boogie and prog rock through a hard rock core, then Black Summer with its cover art by the fantasy artist Melvyn Grant, Stand Up and Be Counted with Max Bacon taking lead vocals, and My Kingdom Come, whose sleeve came from Roger Dean. The closing live album Night of Mystery – Alive! Alive! was drawn from concerts in Yugoslavia and West Germany, and the set carries new liner notes by Rich Davenport of Classic Rock.
