A Mortal Binding is the first album in four years from My Dying Bride, the English band who opened up gothic doom metal in the early 1990s alongside Paradise Lost and Anathema. They formed in 1990 describing what they did as death metal played slower than usual, signed to Peaceville — Paradise Lost's label — after a few demos, and debuted with As The Flower Withers in 1992, a record whose death metal vocals sat over genuinely beautiful melodies and a violin, which is where most of what followed them came from. Nuclear Blast has been their label since The Ghost Of Orion in 2020. Every one of the seven songs here runs past six minutes, and the violin and synthesiser widen the gloom rather than relieve it. The band is Aaron Stainthorpe on vocals, Andrew Craighan and Neil Blanchett on guitars, Lena Abé on bass, Shaun Macgowan on keyboards and violin and Dan Mullins on drums. Nuclear Blast and Ward Records in Japan released it on the same day, 19 April 2024, the Japanese edition as GQCS-91455. Seven tracks, about fifty-five minutes.
