Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle is the first album by Moonlight Sorcery, a trio from Tampere in Finland, and it goes out in Japan under the title Keikyoku no Shiro -- the thorned castle. Word of their EP Piercing Through the Frozen Eternity, put out digitally on Bandcamp in February 2022, travelled among listeners at home and abroad, and a Japan-only edition pairing that EP with four new songs followed last year. The writing is melodic death and black metal built around spectral keyboards, with neo-classical speed playing and formal beauty layered over it, and Dan Swanö -- once of Edge of Sanity, and long known as a producer -- worked on the record. The Japanese edition adds the band's cover of Deep Purple's "Burn", which they had released on a vinyl EP the same year. Marquee Inc. released it on 20 December 2023 as MICP-11839. Ten tracks, about fifty minutes.
