Hopiumforthemasses is the new album by Ministry, the industrial metal pioneers whose work shaped Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein among others. They began in 1981 as a synth-pop band, turned steadily heavier, and took gold and platinum certifications with The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste (1989) and Psalm 69 (1992). A split in 2008, a restart in 2011 and the death of guitarist Mike Scaccia in 2012 all stand between then and now. Al Jourgensen, the man at the centre of it, calls this the most Ministry-sounding record he has, because the band made it together in a room the way they did when they were young. Climate change, misogyny, incels, social media: the lyrics go after the present day again. Ward Records issued the Japanese edition on 1 March 2024. Nine tracks, about forty-three minutes.
