Katatonia's Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State came out on 6 June 2025, with Ward Records putting the Japanese edition out the same day as GQCS-91624, translated lyrics and a Japanese essay included; Napalm Records handled it elsewhere. The Swedish band go back to 1991 and to a doom-laden death metal debut, Dance of December Souls, in 1993; clean singing and a gothic, progressive streak widened their audience from there, and they finally played Japan for the first time in 2024. Ten songs here hold night, a Scandinavian kind of hopelessness and a thin seam of hope, with heavy riffing set against delicate guitar harmonies and otherworldly synthesiser — the drop between quiet and roar is what drives them. The line-up is Jonas Renkse on vocals, Niklas Sandin on bass, Daniel Moilanen on drums and Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland on guitars.
