Zero Four One

Zero Four One is the only album Glasgow ever made. The four-piece formed in 1982, in the middle of the new wave of British heavy metal, and took the name of the city they came from; two singles in 1984, "Miles Better" and "Stranded", were the debut, and this followed in 1987, at the height of the style. Two more singles and then they were gone, in 1988. The original pressing was small enough that copies have been expensive ever since, and the record acquired a reputation it was hard to test. What is on it is very much British and of its decade: melodic without the ornament the American bands of the same years went in for, balancing the heavy against the tuneful. The second song, "Secrets In The Dark", is a cover of a Chris Thompson song — of Manfred Mann's Earth Band — and was later issued as a single. It was released in Japan at the time and never reissued here since; Marquee Incorporated finally put out a Japanese edition on 24 April 2024 as MICP-11881, adding "Will You Be Mine", which had only ever appeared on a single. Nine tracks, about forty-four minutes. AOR Heaven had reissued the same running order in 2021.
