When Angels Kill is the first Fifth Angel album in five years and the first concept record of their career. The American band formed in 1984 and their 1986 self-titled debut came out on Shrapnel Records, a label known for fast guitar players — but what set Fifth Angel apart was the melodic writing, and that is what took them to Epic for Time Will Tell in 1989. They broke up the same year as grunge arrived, reunited briefly in 2010 and returned properly in 2017, releasing The Third Secret on Nuclear Blast in 2018, twenty-nine years after their second album. Steven Carlson is the new singer here; the lyrical heavy metal at the core of the band is unchanged. Drummer Ken Mary and guitarist Steve Conley both also play in Flotsam and Jetsam. Nuclear Blast released it on 16 June 2023; Ward Records' Japanese edition followed on 6 October as GQCS-91380. Fourteen tracks.
