Eight years after Eonian, Dimmu Borgir return with Grand Serpent Rising, released by Nuclear Blast on 22 May 2026 and previewed with official music videos for "Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel" and "Ascent", with "As Seen in the Unseen" arriving on release day. According to Ward Records' notes, songwriting stretched on and off from around 2018, the members stockpiled ideas on their own during the pandemic, and there was eventually enough for two albums. Producer Fredrik Nordström helped them keep the sound organic, with the orchestral layers eased back to let the band itself come through. Shagrath (vocals, keyboards) and Silenoz (guitars), who formed the Norwegian group in 1993 and are behind records such as Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon, remain its core. Ward Records' Japanese edition (GQCS-91757, 29 May 2026) carries the thirteen songs, about 1 hour 9 minutes, with Japanese liner notes and translated lyrics.
