Pre-Historic Metal

The twenty-first studio album by Norway's Darkthrone, released by Peaceville Records on 8 May 2026, forty years after the band formed as Black Death in late 1986. It follows 2024's It Beckons Us All....... Since Zephyrous left in 1993 the band has been the duo of Fenriz (Gylve Nagell) and Nocturno Culto (Ted Skjellum). They moved into black metal in the early nineties, took on crust punk and speed metal from 2006, and in recent years have worked classic heavy metal and doom into the mix. This one was recorded at Chaka Khan Studio in Oslo and produced by the band themselves, with Ole Øvstedal, Silje Høgevold and Mads Luis Wattne credited for the recording. Jack Control at Enormous Door and Maor Appelbaum Mastering handled the mastering. The label describes a record that moves across thrash, black, heavy and doom. Fenriz has said that "prehistoric" is not a strict definition but a way of describing what they do — using old styles to make something new. A lyric video for the title track appeared on 20 March 2026, and one for "They Found One of My Graves" on the release date itself. Eight songs.
