Charcoal Grace is the sixth album by Caligula's Horse, the progressive metal band from Brisbane, Australia, whose name comes from the horse the Roman emperor Caligula is said to have doted on. The guitarist Sam Vallen and the singer Jim Grey started it in 2011, put out two records independently and signed to InsideOut Music in 2015; the third, Bloom, never released in Japan, took them on tour with Opeth and Mastodon and drew attention from the metal and progressive camps alike. The subject here was picked up out of the motionless despair of the pandemic — the harshness and the strange beauty that live inside stillness, silence and loss — and the record keeps that dark colour throughout, built around a suite in four parts. Marquee Inc. issued the Japanese edition on 7 February 2024. Nine tracks, about an hour and two minutes.
