Ghost Stories is the first album Blue Öyster Cult have released in four years, after The Symbol Remains — itself their first studio record in nineteen — arrived in 2020. The New York band have been going since 1972, through Secret Treaties and Agents of Fortune and the rest, and had marked their fiftieth anniversary in 2023 with a live album recorded at home in New York. This one runs from the uneasy hard rock they have always been recognisable by to outright ballads, and threads three covers of songs they grew up on through the middle of it: The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", the MC5's "Kick Out The Jams" and The Beatles' "If I Fell". Frontiers and Marquee Incorporated in Japan released it on the same day, 12 April 2024, the Japanese edition as MICP-11865 with The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" added — thirteen tracks, about forty-six minutes.
