Artifex is the fifth Ancient Bards album and their first in six years. The Italian six-piece formed in 2007 around keyboard player Daniele Mazza's idea of setting a story drawn from Norse myth and Final Fantasy to music, and they have written that story across records ever since the EP Trailer of the Black Crystal Sword Saga in 2008 and their Limb Music debut The Alliance of the Kings in 2010; this album continues the same Black Crystal Sword Saga. They played Japan for the first time at Japanese Assault Fest 16 in 2016. Limb Music released Artifex on 25 April 2025 and Marquee Incorporated issued the Japanese two-disc edition (MICP-90128) two days earlier, on 23 April, with a commentary booklet and translated lyrics. Disc one holds the thirteen songs plus a bonus "The Empire of Black Death (Dark Version)"; disc two repeats the thirteen as instrumentals. "Soulbound Symphony", "Unending" and "Ministers of Light" have official videos.
